Yesterday students across the nation participated in a political Walkout in reference to the political gun control debate. Bladen County School’s students took the opportunity to make the day about making a positive change instead of making a political statement.

“It’s an Honor Walk – not a Walkout,” Bladen County Schools posted on their Facebook page. The agenda of the organized lesson was teaching students to honor and respect lives and to take time to be nice to others.

In an orderly and respectful manner Bladen County Schools’ students at East Bladen High School, Elizabethtown Middle School, Clarkton School of Discovery, Tar Heel Middle School, Bladenboro Middle School and West Bladen High School participated in honoring the 17 students & adults of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School tragedy and reminded students to “Walk Up not Walk Out”.

The schools reminded students they should “Walk Up” to the kid who sits alone, be nice to others and thank their teachers. Posters were made with the #WalkUpNotOut. The posters and organizers educated students on the different ways they can be kind to others instead of “walking out on them”.

The memorial part of the educational opportunity at East Bladen High School was led by Ethan Fletcher, Mariah Smith-Cottingham and Ashlee Rivenbark. The students read the 17 names of those lost in the Florida school shooting. As the students stood in the cold wind across the mother county they honored those lost in tragedy by standing by each other and growing a little closer.

Even though the school was presenting the event as a Walk Up not a Walk Out some students did take the opportunity to voice their opinion. Read one student’s blog about the event here:
