Sheriff James A. McVicker said today that an incident which began at approximately 4:30 a.m. ended without incident when the suspect was taken into custody at his residence.

“Our 911 Center received a call at approximately 4  a.m. this morning from a woman reporting she had shot herself,” said McVicker. “When EMS and Law Enforcement arrived they found she had been shot multiple times in the chest and arm with a .22 caliber rifle. She then told my deputies that her boyfriend, Johnny Mack Cook, 48, of 125 Bohica Drive had shot her.”

The victim, Sylvia Ann Jacobs, 46 of 357 Bohica Drive, Elizabethtown, was transported to Bladen County Hospital and then transferred to Cape Fear Valley Hospital in Fayetteville in critical condition.

Deputies learned Cook was in the woods behind the home and shots were heard being fired in the wood line presumably by Cook. A canine unit was deployed and tracked Cook back to his residence. Officers heard Cook inside his residence and attempted to make contact with him but he refused to come to the door.

“I requested the help of the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office SRT Unit and their Hostage Negotiation Team,” said McVicker. “Sheriff Ingram and his deputies responded to our request for mutual aid and once they arrived we were able to make entry into the home and take the suspect into custody without incident.”

Cook was initially charged with Assault With a Deadly Weapon With Intent To Kill Inflicting Serious Injury. He was placed in Bladen County Jail under a $100,000 secured bond. Additional charges are pending.

“I know I have said it before but I am so proud of the cooperation we have with the local departments here in Bladen and with the surrounding counties,” said McVicker. “Sheriff John Ingram and his specialty units came to our assistance and Bladenboro and Elizabethtown Police officers as well as the Highway Patrol helped us with calls while this situation was unfolding. I am in their debt. It is good to know when we need help it is only a phone call away.”
