FUQUAY-VARINA – Bladen County captured runners-up honors Sunday after dropping a 3-1 decision to South Granville Sunday in the championship game of the State-Wide Activities Committee (SWAC) 14-and-Under Boys Soccer state tournament.
Alejandro Lopez fired in the only goal for Bladen County in the championship game. To reach the final Bladen County rolled past the RMPR Hot Shots 8-0 in an earlier game Sunday.
Lopez and Levi Velasco Garcia scored 2 goals each in Sunday’s win over the team from Rocky Mount. Ishaq Algozy knocked in the 1st Bladen goal, before Damian Sanchez turned an assist from Velasco Garcia into a goal and a 2-0 lead.
Velasco Garcia banged in a pair of goals to grow the lead to 4-0. Lopez matched that with 2 goals of his own to stretch the lead to 6-0. Ashton Bryan drilled in a goal off of an assist from Kevin Vargas Diaz, and Vargas Diaz added an unassisted goal to close out the match.
Velasco Garcia and Lopez led the Bladen scoring in the tournament with 6 goals each. Bladen County finished with a 3-2 record.
