The man accused of shooting to death Lonnie Level Smith on Wednesday at a Clarkton housing community turned himself in to authorities Saturday morning, Bladen County Sheriff James McVicker said.

Harold Eugene Swindell, 47, of South Page Road in Clarkton, is charged with first degree murder and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He turned himself in about 10 a.m. Saturday at the Bladen County jail in Elizabethtown, McVicker said. He is expected to have a first appearance hearing Monday in Bladen County District Court.

Smith, 38, of Jasmine Lane of Clarkton, was shot and killed during an altercation in the parking lot at Oakdale Homes in Clarkton about 6 p.m. Wednesday, McVicker said. He was taken to Cape Fear Valley Bladen County Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Warrants were issued for Swindell’s arrest Thursday.
