TAR HEEL – A crew with Carolina Bridge Company had to be rescued from the Cape Fear River near Tar Heel on Wednesday.

According to Bladen County Emergency Management Director Bradley Kinlaw the crew had been working on dismantling the old truss bridge that once spanned the river and is now sitting on a barge in the river.

“One of the crew was attempting to ferry out to the barge and the boat took on water,” said Kinlaw.

He said another crew member was able to get into another boat and rescue his co-worker.

“Eventually the boat that was taking on water ended up about one mile downstream,” said Kinlaw.

He added the boat eventually sunk.

As of Wednesday afternoon, Kinlaw said crews were working to contain the fuel that spilled form the craft and develop a plan to retrieve the sunken boat.
