FOUR OAKS – Bladen County battled back from a 14-1 deficit to within 14-9 Monday night, but the 2-hour time limit expired and Rock Ridge escaped with a 14-9 victory in the Tar Heel Leagues District 5 12U Softball Tournament.
Bladen County will play an elimination game at 8 p.m. Tuesday against the loser of Monday’s game between Johnston County- Central and GCAA.
Rock Ridge scored 2 runs in the 1st inning then added 12 runs in the 2nd on 8 walks, 4 hits and a hit batter.
Avianna Whittington reached base on a fielder’s choice in the Bladen 1st inning then stole 3rd base and home plate for the 1st Bladen run. Angelina Jones blasted an inside-the-park home run to left field in the 2nd inning for Bladen County.
India Storms walked and stole a base to begin the Bladen 3rd inning. Kaylee Fisher smoked a single through the middle that scored Storms. Fisher stole a base before racing home when Racquel Whittington smashed a single through the right side. Avianna Whittington walked, and Racquel Whittington stole 3rd base then darted home on a wild pitch. Makynzee Thompson ripped a single throught the left side that scored Avianna Whittington and trimmed the margin to 14-7.
Storms and Ruby Liggitt drew walks in the Bladen 4th inning. Racquel Whittington hammered a double to right field that scored Storms and Liggitt and closed the gap to 14-9.
Racquel Whittington batted 2-for-3 with a double, 3 runs batted in and a run scored to lead the Bladen hitters. Jones walloped the solo home run. Thompson and Fisher contributed 1 hit each. Fisher, Thompson and Jones had 1 RBI each. Avianna Whittington and Storms scored 2 runs each. Fisher, Thompson, Jones and Liggitt scored 1 run each.
Laikyn Rogerson started in the circle for Bladen County and struck out 2 in 1.2 innings. Avianna Whittington pitched the final 2.1 innings and allowed 3 runs while striking out 4.
