The town of Tar Heel has requested information regarding costs for two Bladen County Sheriff’s Deputies to assigned to their area. Mayor Roy Dew said the town board is exploring its options.

Mayor Dew said the board has held a meeting to discuss potential costs associated with the request. He did not recall the exact dollar amount discussed.

Bladen County Sheriff’s Office Major Larry Guyton said a request for information was made by the town of Tar Heel staff in an attempt to learn what it would cost to have deputies assigned to Tar Heel on a full-time basis. He said the information requested has been sent to the town but the Sheriff’s Office has not received a response.

Guyton said the Sheriff’s Office also has not received a response to the information submitted to the town of Clarkton regarding their request for two deputies to be assigned to patrol Clarkton. The town of Clarkton has requested to have two deputies who will be permanently assigned to the town and their salaries and equipment would be reimbursed by the town.

The town of Tar Heel has a population of 117 according to the 2010 U.S. Census. It is home to Smithfield Foods which is the largest pork processing facility in the world.
