Former teacher makes first appearance on charges
A former West Bladen High School teacher made her first appearance in court on Monday afternoon. Bladen County Clerk of Superior Court Nikki Dennis presided over the proceedings.
Shanna May Harrelson, 38, of Clarkton, was asked if she had seen the charges against her and she replied no. Dennis explained to Harrelson she could have either a court appointed attorney or she could hire an attorney of her choice. Dennis allowed Harrelson to complete the affidavit for a court appointed attorney and Andrew Wall was appointed to serve as her attorney.
Assistant District Attorney Alisha Benjamin read the charges against Harrelson in court. The charges are as follows: disseminating obscene material to a minor, one felony count of crime against nature, and one felony count of a sex act with a student. The charge of disseminating obscene material to a minor and the charge of crime against nature each carry a maximum sentence of 24 months and one felony count of a sex act with a student carries a maximum sentence of 47 months.
A probable cause hearing was scheduled for June 2 and Harrelson’s bond remains at $55,000.
Bladen County Chief Deputy Larry Guyton said in a press release last week the Bladen County Board of Education contacted the Bladen County Sheriff’s Office about one and one-half weeks ago regarding inappropriate photos being shown.Share:
