The Bladen County Board of Commissioners met on Monday night and received the State of the County Health report. Marianne Valentiner, Health Educator with the Health Department, addressed the Commissioners.
She told the board the #1 cause of death in Bladen County is heart disease and #2 is tracheobronchial (throat) cancer and lung cancer, #3 is lower respiratory disease, #4 is cerebrovascular disease, #5 is unintentional injuries such as car crashes, accidental gunshot wounds, drowning, etc. and #6 is Diabetes.
Valentiner said the new emerging issue is teen pregnancy. She said the teen pregnancy rate in the county has been going down since 2001.
Health and Human Services Director David Howard presented the board with a resolution regarding the sale of the Bladen County Home Health Agency which the board approved. Howard also presented the board with an agreement with the East Coast Migrant Head Start which was approved along with a consolidated agreement.
In other business the board appointed Ethel Davis to the Adult Care Home Community Advisory Committee. Commissioner Russell Priest voted no.
The board appointed Faye Collins, Michelle Campbell and Kelly Robeson to the BARTS Advisory Board and the board appointed Ricky Byrd, David Howell and Larry Yost to the Nursing Home Advisory Committee.
*The board voted to set April 20 as the date to meet with the Legislative Delegation and they set April 24 as the date for the Preliminary Budget Review meeting.
*The board rejected an offer to purchase a county owned property located on Nobie Street for $1,500. Tax Administrator Renee Davis told the board the estimated value of the property is $6,470 and the foreclosure cost the county $4,300.
*The board voted to set April 3 as the date for a meeting of the Board of Equalization and Review.
*The Board met for about one hour in a closed session to consider matters of Economic Development and client-attorney privilege. No vote was taken on the matter following the matter.
