1864 – The Battle of Plymouth, North Carolina began during the Civil War which resulted in the Confederates taking back the area near the mouth of the Roanoke River that the Union had captured two years earlier.

1892 – The first Sunday National League baseball game was played with the Cincinnati Reds beating the St. Louis Browns 5-1.

1907 – Ellis Island, New York processed a record 11,745 immigrants in a single day.

1924 – Metro Pictures, Goldwyn Pictures and Louis B. Mayer Pictures Co. merged to form Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM).

1939 – In his sixth title defense, world heavyweight boxing champion Joe Louis knocked out Jack Roper in the first round at Wrigley Field in Los Angeles, California.

1941 – The United State Office of Price Administration was created to handle the rationing of goods and fixing prices during World War II.

1951 – Mickey Mantle made his major league debut with the New York Yankees, going 1-for-4 in a 5-0 win against Boston.

1961 – In a CIA-backed invasion, 1,400 Cuban exiles landed at the Bay of Pigs in Cuba in an unsuccessful attempt to overthrow President Fidel Castro.

1964 – The Ford Mustang was formally introduced with a base sticker price of $2,368.

1967 – Surveyor 3 launched, a robotic lander, was launched and successfully soft-landed on the Moon three days late.

1969 – Sirhan Sirhan was convicted of assassinating Senator Robert F. Kennedy on June 5, 1968. He was sentenced to death, which later was commuted to life in prison.

1978 – A record 63.5 million shares were traded on the New York Stock Exchange.

1982 – Country music legend Johnny Cash hosted Saturday Night Live, participating in skits and performing a medley of his hits. Elton John was the musical guest.

1991 – The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed above 3,000 for the first time at 3,004.46.

1999 – NFL Draft: University of Kentucky quarterback Tim Couch was the first pick by the Cleveland Browns.

2011 – “Games of Thrones,” based on fantasy novels by George R.R. Martin, premiered on HBO.

2018 – Former FBI director James Comey published his political autobiography “A Higher Loyalty: Truth, Lies, and Leadership.”

2022 – Alex Jones’ companies, including the web site Infowars, filed for bankruptcy after losing defamation suits filed by families of the Sandy Hook Massacre, which Jones had called a hoax.
