1909 – Congress passed the Payne-Aldrich bill, raising certain tariffs on goods entering the United States.

1914 – President Woodrow Wilson refused to recognize Victoriano Huerta as President of Mexico on the grounds that the dictator had not been elected by the people.

1923 – In “Adkins vs. Children’s Hospital,” the Supreme Court found that the minimum wage law for women and children, adopted by the District of Columbia, was unconstitutional.

1928 – Mae West’s made her New York City debut in a daring new play “Diamond Lil.”

1940 – PGA established the Golf Hall of Fame at the suggestion of sportswriter Grantland Rice.

1945 – National Football League required players to wear long stockings. The rule remains in effect.

1947 – Tornadoes struck West Texas and Oklahoma, killing 169 people and injuring 1,300.

1950 – Bob Hope made his first national television appearance as the regular host of the variety show Star Spangled Revue.

1954 – WECT-TV,channel 6 in Wilmington, North Carolina began broadcasting.

1959 – Bill Sharman extended his NBA record to 56 consecutive free throws made.

1963 – Winston Churchill became the first honorary United States citizen by President John F. Kennedy.

1965 – First baseball game at the Houston Astrodome: The Astros beat the New York Yankees 2-1 in an exhibition as Mickey Mantle hit the first indoor home run with President Lyndon Johnson and his wife, Lady Bird, in attendance.

1967 – The First Boeing 737-100 made its maiden test flight.

1974 – San Diego Padres owner Ray Kroc addressed fans over the public address system, saying, “Ladies and gentlemen, I suffer with you. I’ve never seen such stupid baseball playing in my life,” after the team lost to the Houston Astros.

1981 – Navy nuclear submarine USS George Washington rammed Japanese freighter Nissho Maru, sinking the civilian ship in the South China Sea.

1989 – Washington, D.C. march supporting the 1973 Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision that allowed abortions.

1994 – Space Shuttle Endeavour, STS-59, launched into orbit on a mission to deploy the Space Radar Laboratory..

2012 – “The Lion King” became the highest grossing Broadway show, overtaking “The Phantom of the Opera” in total earnings with $853,846,062.

2018 – Senator Tammy Duckworth of Illinois became the first senator to give while in office.

2022 – Joel Embiid was named the NBA scoring champion, averaging 30.6 points per game, becoming the first center in over 40 years to average more than 30 points per game.

2024 – Arizona Supreme Court upheld a 1864 law banning all abortions except to save a woman’s life.
