1898 – Hawaii is formally annexed to the United States.

1908 – Henry Ford’s company builds the first Model T car.

1922 – Dedication of Frederick Douglass’ home in Washington, D.C. as national shrine.

1928 – IX Summer Olympic Games close in Amsterdam, Netherlands.

1936 – A state-record 120 degrees in Seymour Texas.

1942 – British Prime Minister Winston Churchill arrives in Moscow for a conference with Soviet Premier Joseph Stalin and United States representative W. Averell Harriman during World War II.

1948 – Cleveland Indians get 29 hits in a 9-inning game in a 26-3 win against the St. Louis Browns.

1953 – Ann Davison arrives in Miami in her 23 foot boat Felicity Ann, becoming the first woman to sail solo across the Atlantic.

1955 – Hurricane Connie makes landfall near Fort Macon State Park in Carteret County, North Carolina as a Category 3 storm.

1960 – American Ralph Boston sets a long jump world record of 26 feet, 11.25 inches at the United States Olympic trials, overtaking Jesse Owens’ record.

1964 – Mickey Mantle hits a home run from both sides of the plate for a record 10th and final time with one going 502 feet in a 7-3 win against the Chicago White Sox.

1972 – Last American combat ground troops leave Vietnam.

1981 – IBM introduces its first personal computer, the PC-DOS version 1.0.

1984 – Harmon Killebrew, Rick Ferrell, Don Drysdale, Pee Wee Reese and Luis Aparicio are inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York.

1992 – Canada, Mexico and the United States announce a completion of negotiations for the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).

2004 – New Jersey Governor James McGreevey comes out publicly as gay.

2014 – Ebola outbreak death toll exceeds 1,000 people.

2017 – “Unite the Right” march in Charlottesville, Virginia turns violet when car rams protesters killing one and injuring 19. President Donald Trump at a press conference at Trump Towers says “there is blame on both sides.”

2021 – Census reveals the United States has grown more diverse. Growth in Hispanic (+23%) and Asian (+36%) populations and the first decline in white population (-2.6%).
