1901 – SS Islander hits iceberg near Alaska and sinks, killing 70 peop;e.

1912 – 2,500 United States Marines invade Nicaragua. Troops remain until 1925.

1922 – First “old time” musicians radio broadcast featuring The Jenkins Family on WSB-Atlanta.

1932 – Phillips makes 1 millionth radio.

1935 – Social Security Act becomes law.

1937 – Appalachian trail is formally completed, traversing 2,000 miles and 14 states from Georgia to Maine.

1945 – V-J Day: The Empire of Japan surrenders unconditionally to the Allies, ending World War II (August 15 in Japan and other countries depending on the time zone).

1951 – “A Place in the Sun,” film adaptation of Theodore Dreiser’s “An American Tragedy,” directed by George Stevens, starring Montgomery Cliff, Elizabeth Taylor and Shelly Winters, premieres in Los Angeles. The movie wins six Academy Awards, including Best Director, for 1952.

1997 – Convicted Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVeigh formally sentenced to death by Oklahoma Court of Appeals.

2015 – Most extensive face transplant surgery ever performed on Patrick Hardison by Dr. Eduardo Rodriguez at New York University’s Langone Medical Center.

2017 – President Donald Trump condemns racist violence at the White House after criticism of his earlier response to Charlottesville, Virginia, violence.

2023 – Former President Donald Trump and 18 others, including Rudy Giuliani and Mark Meadows, indicted by a grand jury in Atlanta on felony charges for attempting to overturn the 2020 election in Georgia.
