1908 – America’s Great White Fleet arrives in Sydney, Australia, to be greeted with a tremendous welcome as 221 American sailors desert to remain in Australia.

1912 – Plant Quarantine Act goes into effect.

1920 – First United States commercial radio station, 8MK WWJ, begins daily broadcasting.

1930 – Dumont’s first TV broadcast for home reception airs in New York City.

1938 – New York Yankees future Baseball Hall of Fame first baseman Lou Gehrig hits record 23rd and final grand slam in an 11-3 win over the Philadelphia Athletics at Shibe Park.

1948 – 15th NFL Chicago All-Star Game: Chicago Cardinals 28, All-Stars 0 with 101,220 people in attendance.

1956 – Republicans convene at Cow Palace in San Francisco, California.

1964 – President Lyndon B. Johnson signs the Economic Opportunity Act, an anti-poverty measure totaling nearly $1 billion.

1967 – LPGA Western Open Women’s Golf, Pekin Country Club in Illinois: Kathy Whiteworth wins by 7 strokes over Sandra Haynie.

1971 – FBI begins covert investigation of journalist Daniel Schorr.

1974 – Nolan Ryan’s pitch measured at record 100.4 mph.

1977 – NASA launches Voyager 2 towards Jupiter and Saturn, and later Uranus and Neptune.

1985 – Israel ships 96 TOW missiles to Iran on behalf of the United States.

1991 – Miami Dolphins quarterback Dan Marino surpasses Joe Montana as the highest paid National Football League player with a 5-year extension worth $25 million.

1998 – United States embassy bombings: US military launches cruise missile attacks against alleged al-Qaida camps in Afghanistan and a suspected chemical plant in Sudan in retaliation for August 7 bombings of American embassies in Kenya and Tanzania.

2015 – 30 students at West Point Military Academy are injured in a mass pillow fight.

2019 – Computer systems in 22 small Texas towns hacked and held to ransom in coordination attack that prompts FBI investigation.

2020 -Kamala Harris accepts her nomination for vice president, becoming the first woman of color on a major-party ticket in the United States, saying, “there is no vaccine for racism.”

2023 – Tropical Storm Hilary makes landfall on Mexico’s Baja peninsula, the first tropical storm to hit the region in 84 years.
