1909 – Workers start pouring concrete for the Panama Canal.

1912 – District of Alaska becomes an organized incorporated territory of the United States.

1922 – Cy Williams is the first Philadelphia Phillies baseball player to hit for the cycle with a single, double, triple and home run in the same game.

1932 – First transcontinental non-stop flight by a woman when Amelia Earhart takes off from Los Angeles, California.

1936 – President Franklin Roosevelt gives the Federal Bureau of Investigation the authority to gather intelligence on fascist and communist groups.

1948 – Cleveland Indians pitching ace Bob Feller returns from serving in the United States Navy and strikes our 12 batters.

1954 – President Dwight Eisenhower signs Communist Control Act, outlawing the Communist Party during the height of McCarthyism.

1959 – Hiram L. Fong is sworn in as the first Chinese-American Senator while Daniel K. Inouye is sworn in as the first Japanese-American Representative. Both men are from Hawaii.

1962 – Los Angeles Dodgers coach Leo Durocher suffers a near-fatal allergic reaction to a penicillin injection while in the clubhouse at the Polo grounds in New York City.

1972 – Gordie Howe and Jean Beliveau are inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame.

1983 – Cincinnati Reds’ Pete Rose ends consecutive games played streak at 745.

1991 – Ukraine declares independence from the USSR.

1992 – Hurricane Andrew hits South Florida, making landfall at Elliott Key and later Homestead, 44 die and $25 billion in damage is recorded.

1995 – Microsoft debuts Windows 95.

2006 – After signing a one-day contract with the San Francisco 48ers, Jerry Rice officially retires from the National Football League.

2008 – Summer Olympics in Beijing becomes the most watched event on television with nearly 5 billion viewers, which is 70% of the world’s population.

2011 – Steve Jobs resigns as CEO of Apple Inc., due to illness and is succeeded by Tim Cook.

2015 – Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg announces that for the first time 1 billion people logged into Facebook.

2022 – President Biden announces a plan to cancel student loan debts by $10,000 for those earning less than $125,000 and $20,000 for those who had received Pell grants.
