1900 – New Ellis Island immigration station completed for $1.5 million.

1903 – The Wright brothers make the first sustained motorized aircraft flight at 10:35 a.m., piloted by Orville Wright at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina.

1920 – American League votes to let spitball pitcher’s to continue using the pitch.

1924 – First diesel electric locomotive in the United States enters service in Bronx, New York.

1927 – United States submarine S-4 sinks after a collision, killing all 34 sailors aboard.

1935 – First flight of the Douglas DC-3 (C-47) Skytrain/Dakota airplane is made.

1944 – United States Army announces an end to excluding Japanese-Americans from the West Coast as detainees are released.

1947 – New York struck by a blizzard, resulting with 27 inches of snow.

1953 – Federal Communications Commission approves RCA’s black-and-white-compatible color TV specifications.

1964 – “Goldfinger,” the third James Bond film, starring Sean Connery and Honor Blackman, premieres in London.

1975 – Lynette Fromme sentenced to life in prison for attempt on President Gerald Ford’s life.

1978 – The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) raises oil prices by 18% and agrees on a 14.5% petroleum price increase for 1979 to be implemented quarterly.

1986 – Davina Thompson makes medical history by having the first heart, lung and liver transplant at Papworth Hospital in Cambridge, England.

1986 – Congress forms an “Irangate” committee.

1989 – “The Simpsons,” created by Matt Groening, premieres on Fox-TV as a full animated series with the episode “Simpsons Roasting on an Open Fire.”

1991 – Soap opera “One Life To Live” airs its 6,000th episode.

2003 – SpaceShipOne flight 11P, piloted by Brian Binnie, makes its first supersonic flight.

2012 – NASA completes a successful mission to map the Moon’s gravity field.

2018 – David Berry Jr., a poacher sentenced to a year in prison for killing hundreds of deer in Missouri, is ordered to watch the film “Bambi” at least once a month during his time in custody.

2022 – The Minnesota Vikings recover from 33-0 halftime deficit to beat the Indianapolis Colts 38-36 in overtime at US Bank Stadium in Minneapolis for the biggest comeback in National Football League history.
