1902 – Scott Joplin copyrighted “The Entertainer” and several other piano rag compositions through the United States Copyright Office.

1913 – First movie serial “The Adventures of Kathlyn” premieres in Chicago.

1930 – Fred P. Newton completes the longest swim ever (1,826 miles) when he swam in the Mississippi River from Ford Dam, Minnesota, to New Orleans.

1932 – Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers’ first movie together in “Flying Down to Rio,” directed by Thornton Freeland, premieres in New York City.

1933 – New York Yankees owner Jacob Ruppert refuses to release future Baseball Hall of Fame slugger Babe Ruth to manage the Cincinnati Reds.

1934 – First collegiate basketball doubleheader is played at Madison Square Garden in New York City: New York University beats Notre Dame 25-18 and Westminster edges St. John’s 37-33.

1940 – Largest German air raid on London as over 10,000 bombs, including the first incendiary bombs, are dropped on the city as part of the Blitz during World War II.

1952 – First transistorized hearing aid offered for sale in Elmsford, New York.

1958 – TV soap opera “Young Dr. Malone” debuts.

1965 – CBS purchases NFL television rights for 1966-68 seasons at $18.8 million per year.

1968 – American Football League Championship, Shea Stadium, New York City: New York Jets beat Oakland Raiders 27-23 as Joe Namath passes for three touchdowns to spark the Jets.

1972 – Life magazine ceased publication.

1975 – 11 people killed, 75 hurt by terrorist bomb at LaGuardia Airport in New York City.

1982 – College football coach Paul “Bear” Bryant ends his career with University of Alabama. Bryant won 323 games in his career.

1987 – Food and Drug Administration first approves the use of Prozac (fluoxetine hydrochloride) to treat depression.

1997 – Russia signs agreement to build a $3 billion nuclear power plant in China.

2007 – Tom Brady sets a National Football League record, throwing his 50th touchdown pass of the season, and the New England Patriots become the first team in NFL history to finish the regular season 16-0.

2016 – President Barack Obama retaliates against Russia for hacking American computer systems and trying to influence the 2016 presidential election by ejecting 35 Russian spies and imposing sanctions.

2018 – 85th Orange Bowl: #1 Alabama beats #4 Oklahoma 45-34.

2020 – Milwaukee Bucks break the National Basketball Association record for most 3 pointers made by a team in a single game with 29 in a 144-97 victory over the Heat in Miami.
