1790 – US Supreme Court convenes for 1st time (NYC)

1843 – Oldest continuous writer of insurance in America – The Mutual Life Insurance Company of New York (MONY) opens.

1862 – Julia Howe publishes “Battle Hymn of Republic”

1898 – 1st auto insurance policy in US issued, by Travelers Insurance Co.

1913 – American all-around athlete Jim Thorpe signs a contract to play baseball with the New York Giants; unlike his other sporting endeavours the Olympic-medal winner’s career in MLB was uninspiring.

1920 – 1st commercial armored car introduces (St. Paul, Minnesota)

1978 – Harriet Tubman is 1st African American woman to be honored on a US postage stamp.

1991 – US Air & Skywest Fairchild jet collide at LA Airport killing 32.

1996 – The Communication Decency Act is passed by the U.S. Congress.

2003 – Space Shuttle Columbia disintegrates during reentry into the Earth’s atmosphere, killing all seven astronauts aboard.

2006 – Economist Ben Bernanke becomes chairman of the US Federal Reserve, succeeding Alan Greenspan.

2014 – Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning becomes all-time record-holder for MVP trophies, winning his 5th at the NFL Honors in New York; also 2003 Offensive Player of the Year.

2019 – US President Donald Trump confirms US withdrawal from the Intermediate-range Nuclear Forces Treaty because of Russia’s violation of the treaty.
