1897 – Martha Hughes Cannon of Utah takes office as the first woman state senator in the United States after defeating her husband, Angus.

1914 – First sedan-type car, a Hudson, goes on display at the 13th Auto Show in New York City.

1915 – Jacob Ruppert and Colonel Tillinghast Huston purchase the New York Yankees for $480,000. Ruppert pays his portion in cash.

1922 – Insulin is first used on humans when Frederick Banting injects 14-year-old Canadian Leonard Thompson to treat his diabetes.

1935 – Amelia Earhart flies from Honolulu to Oakland, California, non-stop, of course.

1942 – A state record minus-23 degrees in Kingston, Rhode Island.

1957 – Mass murderer John “Jack” Gilbert Graham, who killed 44 people aboard a United Airlines flight by using a dynamite time bomb, is executed via the gas chamber.

1960 – LaMar Clark sets a pro boxing record of 44 consecutive knockouts.

1963 – Beatles release single “Please, Please Me/Ask Me Why,” which peaks at #2 in the United Kingdom and #3 in the United States.

1964 – First government report by Surgeon General Luther Terry warning that smoking may be hazardous.

1971 – Detroit Tigers ace reliever John Hiller, 27, suffers a heart attack, but later makes a remarkable comeback to record 38 saves.

1982 – Atlanta, Georgia’s temperature goes below zero.

1984 – Denver Nuggets 163, San Antonio Spurs 155 is the highest scoring NBA game.

1986 – Douglas Wilder of Virginia becomes the first African-American Lieutenant Governor since reconstruction when he is sworn in.

1996 – Space Shuttle STS 72 (Endeavour 10) launches into space.

2004 – Trailing the Green Bay Packers by 3 points in the NFC Divisional playoff game, Philadelphia Eagles face 4th and 26 on their final drive. Donovan McNabb passes to Freddie Mitchell for 29 yards. The Eagles tie the game and go on to win in overtime.

2010 – Simon Cowell leaves “American Idol.”

2021 – Ireland becomes the country with the world’s highest COVID-19 infection rate after a dramatic surge results in seven-day rolling average of 1,394 cases per million people.

2021 – House Democrats introduce one article of impeachment against President Donald Trump for “incitement of insurrection” for encouraging his supporters to riot at the Capitol.

2024 – The United States and United Kingdom launch multiple air strikes against Iranian backed Houthis in Yemen in retaliation for attacks on vessels in the Red Sea.
