1903 – First regular transatlantic radio broadcast between the United States and England.

1915 – Neon tube sign patented by George Claude.

1922 – Geological survey says United States oil supply will be depleted in 20 years.

1934 – Major League Baseball Commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis denies Joe Jackson’s appeal for reinstatement into baseball. Jackson was banned after the 1919 “Black Sox” World Series scandal. The scandal involved eight White Sox players who were accused of intentionally losing games in the 1919 World Series

1935 – Coopers Inc. sells the world’s first men’s briefs in Chicago, calls it the “jockey”

1938 – General Motors begins mass production of diesel engines.

1940 – The Three Stooges film “You Nasty Spy!” about the Nazis is shown with the disclaimer, “any resemblance between the characters in this picture and any persons, living or dead, is a miracle.”

1952 – PGA approves allowing black participants in its golf tournaments.

1955 – President Dwight Eisenhower holds the first presidential news conference filmed for television.

1961 – The first episode of “The Dick Van Dyke Show” is filmed.

1972 – Sandy Koufax, Yogi Berra and Early Wynn are elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame.

1974 – Notre Dame beats UCLA 71-70 in South Bend, Indiana to end the Bruins’ NCAA-record 88-game basketball win streak.

1978 – The last Volkswagen Beetle made in Germany leaves VW’s plant in Emden. Beetle production in Latin America would continue until 2003.

1986 – Cerebral Palsy telethon hosted by entertainer Jerry Lewis raises $17 million.

1989 – President Ronald Reagan pardons New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner for supplying illegal funds for President Richard Nixon’s re-election campaign.

1994 – A record minus-20 degrees recorded in Cleveland, Ohio.

2000 – Michael Jordan, who led the Chicago Bulls to a NBA championship as a player, returns to the NBA, joining the Washington Wizards as part-owner and President of Basketball Operations.

2012 – FBI shuts down Megaupload.com for alleged copyright infringement. The hacker group Anonymous responds by attacking government and entertainment industry websites.

2021 – The death toll from COVID-19 in the United States passes 400,000 people.
