1904 – A Pennsylvania state-record minus-42 degrees in Smethport.

1914 – Industrialist Henry Ford announces his $5 minimum per day wage, doubling most workers’ pay from $2.40 for a 9 hour day to $5 an 8 hour day.

1927 – Major League Baseball Commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis begins a three-day public hearing on charges that four games played between Chicago and Detroit in 1917 had been thrown by Detroit to help Chicago.

1930 – Bonnie Parker meets Clyde Barrow for the first time at Clarence Clay’s house.

1940 – Federal Communications Commission hears the first transmission of FM radio with clear, static free signal.

1949 – President Harry Truman labels his administration the “Fair Deal.”

1957 – Brooklyn Dodgers’ Jackie Robinson announces his retirement rather than be traded to the New York Giants.

1957 – President Dwight Eisenhower asks Congress to send troops to the Middle East.
