1863 – President Davis orders service duty for confederate army.

1870 – Georgia becomes last confederate state to be readmitted to US.

1912 – American athlete Jim Thorpe is placed in top 4 in all 10 events, for an Olympic record 8,413 points to win the Decathlon gold medal at the Stockholm Olympics, medal stripped in 1913 (played pro baseball), reinstated 1982.

1916 – 22.22″ of ran falls in Altapass, NC (state record)

1916 – Boeing Company (Pacific Aero) formed by William Boeing in Seattle, Washington.

1922 – US Open Men’s Golf, Skokie CC: Gene Sarazen wins the first of his 7 major titles, 1 stroke ahead of runner-up John Black and 20-year-old amateur Bobby Jones.

1932 – US President Herbert Hoover cuts own salary 15%.

1941 – Howard Florey and Norman Heatley present freeze dried mold cultures (Penicillin)

1949 – WBTV TV channel 3 in Charlotte, North Carolina (CBS) begins broadcasting.

1974 – Television news reporter Christine Chubbuck shoots herself live on TV, WXLT, Florida, first person to commit suicide in a live broadcast.

1980 – Johnny Bench hit his 314th HR as a catcher which breaks Yogi Berra’s record.

1980 – Billy Carter, the brother of US President Jimmy Carter, registers as a foreign agent of the Libyan government after it was revealed they paid him hundreds of thousands of dollars.

1991 – US troops leave northern Iraq.

2003 – AOL Time Warner disbands Netscape Communications Corporation. The Mozilla Foundations is established on the same day.

2018 – Senior Players Championship Men’s Golf, Exmoor CC: Fijian Vijay Singh wins in a playoff with Jeff Maggert in 2nd extra hole.
