1829 – William Austin Burt patents America’s first “typographer” or typewriter.

1904 – Ice cream cone created during the St. Louis World’s Fair reputedly by Charles E. Menches.

1925 – New York Yankees first baseman Lou Gehrig hit his first of 23 career grand slams.

1943 – United States 45th Infantry Division occupies Termini on the northern coast of Sicily during World War II.

1944 – United States forces invade Japanese-held Tinian during World War II.

1947 – First United States Navy air squadron of jets in Quonset Point, Rhode Island.

1956 – Joe Cronin and Hank Greenberg are inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York.

1959 – Vice President Richard Nixon begins a visit to the USSR.

1966 – Frank Sinatra’s album “Strangers in The Night” hits #1 on the charts and it wins Grammy for Record Of The Year and Best Male Vocal Performance.

1967 – First successful liver transplant done on 19-month-old Julie Rodriguez by Dr. Thomas Starzl at the University of Colorado.

1973 – Ozark Air Lines Flight 809 knocked out of the air by lightning, landing in St Louis, killing 38 people.

1979 – George Brett of the Kansas City Royals gets his 1,000th major league hit.

1989 – FOX-TV tops ABC, NBC and CBS for the first time with the show “America’s Most Wanted.”

1994 – Space shuttle STS-65: Columbia 17 lands after a record 14 days 55 minutes.

2000 – British Open Men’s Golf, Royal Lytham & St. Annes: Tiger Woods beats Thomas Bjorn and Ernie Els by 8 shots to win his first Open title to become the youngest player at age 24 to win all four major titles.

2009 – The Bank of Canada announces the end of the recession even though it remains nascent and still dependent on government stimulus money.

2019 – Nike’s Jordan Brand signs 2019 NBA #1 draft pick Zion Williamson to the richest multiyear sponsorship deal for a rookie in history, estimated at 7 years for $75 million.

2021 – Major League Baseball’s Cleveland Indians announce team will be renamed the Guardians after the Guardians of Traffic, which are eight large Art Deco statues on the Hope Memorial Bridge located near their playing field.
