1900 – Dr. Walter Reed begins research that cures Yellow Fever.

1911 – Nieuport sets an aircraft speed record of 83 mph.

1916 – Cleveland Indians experiment with numbers on jerseys in a game against the Chicago White Sox. It’s the first time Major League Baseball players are identified by numbers corresponding to those on the scorecard.

1925 – “The Gold Rush,” directed, starring and written by Charlie Chaplin, is released.

1934 – President Franklin D. Roosevelt signs the Federal Credit Union Act, establishing credit unions.

1936 – First flight of the Fw61 helicopter.

1945 – The United Nations Charter is signed by 50 nations in San Francisco.

1946 – Fred Allen’s last radio show and his guest is Jack Benny.

1955 – LPGA Western Open Women’s Golf, Maple Bluff Country Club: Patty Berg wins her fifth Western Open title by 2 strokes over Louise Suggs and Fay Crocker in the first Western Open played at stroke play.

1959 – Queen Elizabeth II and President Dwight D. Eisenhower open the St. Lawrence Seaway, allowing oceangoing vessels to travel from the Atlantic Ocean to the Great Lakes of North America.

1963 – President John F. Kennedy gives his famous “Ich bin ein Berliner” (intended to mean “I am a Berliner”, but may actually mean “I am a doughnut”) speech in West Berlin.

1968 – Iwo Jima and Bonin Islands returned to Japan by the United States.

1974 – The Universal Product Code (UPC) is scanned for the first time to sell a package of Wrigley’s chewing gum at the Marsh Supermarket in Troy, Ohio.

1977 – Elvis Presley sings in Indianapolis in the last performance of his career.

1984 – First flight of Shuttle Discovery (41-D) scrubbed at T-minus 4.

1991 – NBA Draft: UNLV power forward Larry Johnson selected by the Charlotte Hornets.

1997 – Supreme Court upholds doctor-assisted suicide ban.

2008 – Supreme Court rules in District of Columbia v. Heller that the ban on handguns in the District of Columbia is unconstitutional.

2015 – President Barack Obama sings “Amazing Grace” as part of his eulogy for Reverend Clementa Pickney and eight church members killed during a Bible study in Charleston, South Carolina.

2018 – Supreme Court upholds President Donald Trump’s travel ban against mostly Muslim countries.

2020 – New York Times says Russia secretly offered bounties to Taliban-linked forces to kill United States and coalition troops in Afghanistan.
