1881 – Barnum & Bailey Circus, traveling as “The Greatest Show on Earth,” debuts at Madison Square Garden in New York City following the merger of two existing circus groups.

1900 – Japan uses its influence over Russia to deny Russia’s efforts to obtain a naval station at Korean Port of Masampo, the lead up to the Russo-Japanese War.

1911 – North Dakota enacts a hail insurance law to insure growing grain from hail damage.

1922 – WBT-AM in Charlotte, North Carolina begins radio transmissions.

1931 – Schick electric shavers are the first to go on sale in the United States.

1937 – A natural gas explosion at the New London School in Texas resulted in the deaths of 294 people.

1945 – Montreal Canadians’ Maurice “Rocket” Richard becomes the first NHL player to score 50 goals in a season, achieving the milestone in the 50th an final game of the 1944-45 season.

1945 – United States Army Force completes its largest bombing raid on Berlin Germany during World War II with over 1,200 bombers dropping 3,000 tons of explosives.

1953 – The National League approves the Boston Braves move to Milwaukee. It’s the first move of a team since 1903 when the defunct Baltimore franchise moved to New York.

1965 – Poppin’ Fresh Pillsbury DoughBoy introduced.

1966 – Scott Paper begins selling paper dresses, nown as the “Paper Caper,” for $1.25 and a coupon. The dresses actually were made from a durable, nonwoven material called “Dura-Weave.”

1968 – Congress repeals the requirement for a gold reserve against Federal Reserve notes and United States notes.

1977 – United States restricts its citizens from visiting Cuba, Vietnam, North Korea and Cambodia.

1985 – Capital Cities Communications Inc. acquires ABC for $3.5 billion. It’s the first transfer of ownership of a TV network.

1987 – Gerber’s first survey for most popular names for newborns are Jessica and Matthew.

1995 – Michael Jordan announces he is ending his 17-month NBA retirement and returns to the Chicago Bulls.

2003 – FBI agents raid the corporate headquarters of HealthSouth Corporation in Birmingham, Alabama on suspicion of massive corporate fraud led by the company’s top executives.

2011 – MESSENGER spacecraft enters Mercury’s orbit, capturing views of the solar system’s innermost planet.

2018 – First fatal accident involving an Uber self-driving car hitting a pedestrian in Tempe, Arizona.

2021 – House Judiciary Committee hearing begins on the rise of violence and discrimination against Asian-Americans with reports saying 3,800 hate incidents had been recorded over a 12 month period.
