1871 – William Holden of North Carolina becomes the first governor removed from office by impeachment.

1903 – Anthracite Coal Commission, set up by President Theodore Roosevelt during a coal miner’s strike, submits its recommendation for shorter hours, a 10-percent wage increase, and an “open shop.”

1917 – The United States is the first nation to recognize the new government of Russia.

1929 – Coast Guard vessel sinks Canadian schooner I’m Alone, which was suspected of carrying liquor.

1933 – President Franklin Roosevelt signs the Cullen-Harrison Act, legalizing the sale of beer and wine up to 3.4% alcohol.

1941 – James Stewart is inducted into the Army, becoming the first major American movie star to wear a military uniform in World War II.

1946 – First American-built rocket, the WAC Corporal, to leave the Earth’s atmosphere, reaching an altitude of 50 miles.

1957 – “All Shook Up” single released by Elvis Presley.

1957 – A 5.3 magnitude earthquake shakes the San Francisco area.

1960 – First patent for lasers granted to Arthur Schawlow and Charles Townes.

1965 – United States confirms its troops used chemical warfare against the Viet Cong.

1972 – In Eisenstadt v. Baird the Supreme Court rules unmarried people have the same right to contraception as married people.

1972 – Congress approves the Equal Rights Amendment, but only 35 of the required 38 states ratified it that would have made it a part of the Constitution.

1981 – First class postage raised to 18 cents from 15 cents.

1982 – Third NASA Space Shuttle Mission: Columbia 3 launches.

1988 – Congress overrides President Ronald Reagan’s veto of a sweeping civil rights bill.

1996 – STS 76 (Atlantis 16) launches into orbit.

2009 – Mount Redoubt, a volcano in Alaska, began erupting after a prolonged period of rest.

2014 – The United States and European Union impose sanctions on Russia.

2017 – Arctic records its lowest winter ice cover, according to the United States National Snow and Ice Data Center with 5.5 million square miles.

2021 – 10 people shot dead at a supermarket in Boulder, Colorado, by 21 year-old gunman Ahmad Alissa.
