1900 – New York City Mayor Robert Anderson Van Wyck breaks ground for a new underground “Rapid Transit Railroad” that would link Manhattan and Brooklyn.

1910 – 83 degrees, highest temperature recorded, in Cleveland, Ohio in March.

1920 – First US Coast Guard air station established in Morehead City, North Carolina.

1932 – First radio broadcast from a moving train conducted by Belle Baker and rebroadcast on WABC-AM.

1937 – National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. is established by Congress.

1945 – Allied generals Dwight D. Eisenhower, Bernard Montgomery and Omar Bradley discuss the final advance into Germany during World War II.

1947 – Congress proposes a two-term limitation on the presidency.

1958 – Elvis Presley is inducted into the Army, serving for two years.

1964 – The Kennedy half-dollar, struck to honor President John F. Kennedy, is issued.

1966 – Selective Service announces deferments for college undergraduate and graduate students.

1975 – Muhammad Ali defeats Chuck Wepner by technical knock out in the 15th round, retaining his heavyweight boxing title.

1980 – “Nightline with Ted Koppel” premieres on ABC. The program began during the Iran hostage crisis with Koppel serving as host.

1985 – Third straight WTA Tour Championship for tennis legend Martina Navratilova, beating Helena Sukova 6-3, 7-5, 6-4 at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

1989 – Exxon tanker Valdez spills 10.8 million gallons of crude oil in Prince William Sound near Tatitek, Alaska.

1998 – Jonesboro massacre: Two students, ages 11 and 13, fire upon teachers and students at Westside Middle School in Jonesboro, Arkansas. Five people are dead and 10 are wounded.

2003 – The Arab League votes 21-1 in favor of a resolution demanding the immediate and unconditional removal of United States and British soldiers from Iraq.

2017 – President Donald Trump and the Republican party are forced to pull their attempt to repeal the Affordable Care Act after internal opposition.

2019 – Two-time American League Most Valuable Player Mike Trout signs the biggest contract in North America sports history, a $426.5 million, 12-year extension with the Los Angeles Angels.

2023 – A supercell storm produces a powerful EF-4 tornado in the Mississippi Delta, which stays on the ground for more than an hour and over 170 miles, killing 25 people.
