1875 – Congress authorizes 20 cent coin, which lasts only 3 years.

1903 – North Carolina becomes the first state requiring registration of nurses.

1911 – First federal cemetery with Union and Confederate graves opens in Missouri.

1917 – Congress passes first excess profits tax on corporations based on earnings prior to World War I.

1923 – Time magazine publishes its first issue featuring Joseph G. Cannon, who was Speaker of the House of Representatives.

1931 – “The Star-Spangled Banner” officially becomes the national anthem of the United States by congressional resolution with lyrics by Francis Scott Key in 1814 and set to John Stafford Smith’s 16th century tune “The Anacreontic Song.”

1943 – Battle of the Bismarck Sea: Australian and American air forces devastate a Japanese Navy convoy.

1950 – The National-American Football League reverts to calling itself the NFL after 3 months.

1956 – Elvis Presley’s first hit in Billboard’s top 10 is “Heartbreak Hotel.”

1960 – Ninth largest snowfall in New York City history at 14.5 inches.

1966 – Twister hits Jackson, Mississippi three minutes after first sighting, killing 57 people.

1969 – Apollo 9 launched for 151 Earth orbits in 10 days.

1980 – The first nuclear submarine, USS Nautilus, is decommissioned.

1985 – Bill Shoemaker becomes first jockey to win $100 million.

1991 – Los Angeles police officers severely beat motorist Rodney King, the beating is captured on amateur video and later leads to riots when the police officers are acquitted.

1998 – Bill Gates testifies at the Senate Judiciary Committee about Microsoft’s dominant position in the software industry.

2005 – Steve Fossett becomes the first person to fly an airplane around the world solo without any stops without refueling – a journey of 25,000 miles completed in 67 hours and 2 minutes.

2013 – A 2-year old girl born in the United States becomes the first child born with HIV to be cured.

2019 – Multiple tornadoes tear through Georgia and Alabama, killing at least 23 people.

2024 – Iowa’s Caitlin Clark becomes the NCAA Division 1 all-time scoring leader, surpassing Pete Maravich’s career total of 3,667. Her 35 points in a win over visiting Ohio State brings her total to 3,685.
