1876 – Alexander Graham Bell receives a patent for the telephone.

1887 – North Carolina State University is founded by the North Carolina General Assembly.

1908 – Cincinnati Mayor Mark Breith stands before city council and announces that “women are not physically fit to operate automobiles.”

1918 – President Woodrow Wilson authorizes United States Army’s Distinguished Service Medal.

1926 – First public test of transatlantic telephone call made from New York to London.

1935 – Malcolm Campbell sets world land speed record of 276.21 mph driving his famous BlueBird car. It was the last record set at Daytona Beach, Florida.

1941 – Third largest snowfall in New York City history of 18.1 inches.

1945 – United States 9th Armored Division attacks Remagen, Germany, crosses Rhine River during World War II.

1951 – Ezzard Charles beats Jersey Joe Walcott in 15 rounds for the second time to win the National Boxing Association world heavyweight title at the Olympia in Detroit, Michigan.

1962 – Ground-breaking report “Smoking and Health” published by the British Royal College of Physicians is the first major report to warn of the dangers of smoking.

1967 – Teamsters president Jimmy Hoffa begins an eight-year jail sentence for defrauding the union and jury tampering. The sentence was commuted December 23, 1971.

1972 – “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face” single written by Ewan MacColl is released by Roberta Flack. It becomes Billboard Song of the Year.

1979 – Baseball exhibition season opens with semi-pro and amateur umpires due to a labor dispute between major league umpires and the leagues.

1986 – Wayne Gretzky breaks his own National Hockey League season record with his 136th assist in Edmonton’s 5-3 win against Pittsburgh.

1989 – Partial eclipse of the Sun occurred when the Moon passed between Earth and the Sun. It could best be seen in Hawaii, northwest North American and Greenland.

1996 – Magic Johnson becomes the second NBA player to reach 10,000 career assists.

2010 – 82nd Academy Awards: “The Hurt Locker,” Jeff Bridges and Sandra Bullock win.

2016 – Peyton Manning announces his retirement from the Denver Broncos and the NFL.

2022 – Global death toll from COVID-19 passes 6 million, according to Johns Hopkins figures, with 57% of the world’s population fully vaccinated.

2024 – President Joe Biden gives a fiery state of the union speech to Congress, addressing the question of his age head on.
