This Day In History1817 – The New York Stock Exchange is founded.

1884 – Susan B. Anthony addresses U.S. House Judiciary Committee arguing for an amendment to the U.S. Constitution granting women the right to vote, 16 years after legislators 1st introduced a federal women’s suffrage amendment.

1900 – National League baseball decides to go with 8 teams, they include Baltimore, Cleveland, Louisville & Washington (in 1953 Boston Braves move to Milwaukee)

1913 – Internal Revenue Service begins to levy & collect income taxes.

1927 – Pan American Airlines incorporates.

1930 – Babe Ruth signs 2-year contract for $160,000 with NY Yankee GM Ed Barrow, wrongly predicts “No one will ever be paid more than Ruth”.

1936 – The first stock car race is held in Daytona Beach, Florida.

1944 – US resumes bombing Berlin.

1946 – 1st helicopter licensed for commercial use (NYC).

1948 – US Supreme Court rules in McCollum v. Board of Education that religious instruction in public schools is unconstitutional.

1953 – Census indicates 239,000 farmers gave up farming in last 2 years.

1958 – William Faulkner says US school degenerated to become babysitters.

1967 – New Orleans Saints begin selling season tickets (20,000 sold 1st day).

1971 – Joe Frazier beats Muhammad Ali in 15 rounds, retains heavyweight boxing title at Madison Square Garden.

1972 – 1st flight of the Goodyear blimp.

1980 – 6th People’s Choice Awards: Burt Reynolds & Jane Fonda win (Motion Picture) and Alan Alda & Carol Burnett win (TV).

1987 – 34th ACC Men’s Basketball Tournament: NC State beats North Carolina, 68-67.

1994 – US Defense Department announces smoking ban in workplaces.

2012 – Toyota recalls 700,000 vehicles over safety concerns.

2016 – Turner Classic Movies show several of Claire Trevor’s films to honor the 106th anniversary of her birth.
