1916 – Claiming that the United States must act to quell dangerous disorder, the government ordered Marines to land in Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic. The occupation was motivated by concerns about potential German influence in the region during World War I, as well as instability and financial problems within the Dominican Republic.

1928 – Mickey Mouse made his first appearance in the silent animated short film “Plane Crazy.”

1934 – The United States Department of Justice offered a $25,000 reward for bank robber John Dillinger, dead or alive.

1940 – Richard and Maurice McDonald opened the first McDonald’s restaurant in San Bernardino, California. The restaurant served barbecue and other items, but the brothers later realized that the majority of their sales came from hamburgers.

1942 – Gasoline was first rationed in the United States in 17 eastern states to aid the war effort during World War II.

1945 – World War II: The final skirmish in Europe was fought near Prevalje, Slovenia.

1951 – AT&T became the first United States corporation to have a million stockholders after young car salesman Brady Denton purchased seven shares worth $1,078.

1957 – Evangelist Billy Graham launched his “crusade” in front of 18,000 people at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

1970 – President Nixon announced the first women selected for promotion to brigadier general: Elizabeth Hoisington and Anna Mae Hays.

1981 – TV comedy film “The Harlem Globetrotters on Gilligan’s Island” aired on NBC.

1988 – The Soviet Union began withdrawing its 115,000 troops from Afghanistan, marking the end of its eight-year intervention in the country.

2015 – Wall Street investor Carl Icahn invested $100 million in Lyft, a ride-sharing service competing with Uber.

2019 – The birth rate in the United States in 2018 was the lowest in 32 years at 59.1 births per 1,000 women aged 15-44. The birth rate for females aged 15-19 fell 7%.

2023 – Martha Stewart was Sports Illustrated’s oldest cover model at 81, appearing as part of its swimsuit issue.
