1898 – Wilmington, North Carolina coup d’état: White Supremacists violently overthrow local government, killing and threatening black leaders.

1908 – The first Gideon Bible is put in a hotel room.

1911 – Andrew Carnegie forms Carnegie Corporation for scholarly and charitable works.

1926 – Vincent Massey becomes the first Canadian Minister to the United States.

1933 – Black Blizzard snow storm/dust storm rages from South Dakota to the Atlantic Ocean.

1940 – The Pittsburgh Steelers and Philadelphia Eagles play one of only four penalty free games in NFL history. The Steelers win 7-3 at Forbes Field in Pittsburgh.

1951 – The first long distance telephone call without operator assistance is placed from Mayor M. Leslie Denning of Englewood, New Jersey to Mayor Frank Osborne of Alameda, California via AT&T’s Bell System.

1954 – “Marine Corps War Memorial” is unveiled in Arlington County, Virginia and is dedicated to Marines who died in defense of the United States since 1775. It was inspired by the 1945 Iwo Jima photo of servicemen raising the American flag.

1957 – NFL record crowd of 102,368 watch the San Francisco 49ers play the Rams in Los Angeles.

1964 – The Braves sign a 25-year lease to play baseball in the new Atlanta stadium beginning with the 1966 season.

1969 – “Sesame Street” premieres on PBS-TV.

1975 – American iron ore freighter ship SS Edmund Fitzgerald, with a crew of 29, is lost in a storm on Lake Superior.

1982 – International Monetary Fund lends Mexico $3.8 billion due to threatened bankruptcy.

1983 – Federal government shuts down for three days. The shutdown stemmed from Democrats adding roughly $1 billion in education spending, and cutting foreign aid.

1988 – Orel Hershiser, with a 23-8 record, is a unanimous choice as National League Cy Young Award winner.

1998 – “Star Trek: Insurrection” film directed by Jonathan Frakes and starring Patrick Stewart and Jonathan Frakes premieres.

2010 – Disney composer Alan Menken receives the 2,442nd star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

2019 – Iranian President Hassan Rouhani announces the discovery of a new oil field with an estimated 53 billion barrels of oil in Khuzestan province.

2022 – Hurricane Nicole makes landfall near Vero Beach, Florida as a category 1 hurricane, causing widespread destruction and at least two deaths.
