1900 – First automobile show opens at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

1911 – Chevrolet officially enters the automobile market in competition with the Ford Model T.

1917 – 1st class US mail now costs 3 cents per ounce.

1926 – Legendary baseball figure Ty Cobb resigns as Detroit Tiger manager; replaced by George Moriarty, 1st man to hold Major League Baseball’s 4 principal jobs of player, umpire, scout and manager.

1930 – Bank of Italy renamed Bank of America.

1936 – President Franklin D. Roosevelt wins a second term in office, defeating Republican candidate Alf Landon in the most lopsided election in American history in terms of electoral vote.

1941 – Hirohito’s accord on Yamamoto’s attack plan on Pearl Harbor fails.

1952 – Clarence Birdseye markets frozen peas.

1953 – Major League Baseball Rules Committee restores the sacrifice fly rule, eliminated in 1939. Rule says a sacrifice fly is not charged as a time at bat.

1960 – Meredith Wilson’s musical “The Unsinkable Molly Brown”, starring Tammy Grimes, opens at Winter Garden in New York City, runs for 532 performances, and wins a Tony Award.

1967 – Vietnam War: The Battle of Dak To begins, becoming one of the bloodiest battles of the war.

1975 – Chris Evert becomes first tennis player to achieve the No. 1 ranking as the WTA Tour rankings debut: Evert holds top spot for first 26 weeks.

1982 – San Diego guard Randy Smith plays his 845th consecutive game in Clippers’ 130-111 loss in Philadelphia, passing Johnny “Red” Kerr’s NBA record. Smith goes on to play in 906 straight games.

1986 – Lebanese magazine Ash Shirra reveals secret US arms sales to Iran.

1989 – Lou Pinella is named manager of the Cincinnati Reds, replacing Pete Rose who is banned for life for gambling on MLB games.

1995 – Space shuttle STS-66 (Atlantis 13) launches.

2001 – Arkansas beats Mississippi 58-55 at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium, Oxford, in 7 overtime periods; the longest game in NCAA football history.

2009 – 23rd Soul Train Music Awards: Michael Jackson, Charlie Wilson & Chaka Khan win.

2014 – New York’s 104-story One World Trade Center officially opens 13 years after the September 11 attacks.

2019 – Olivia Newton-John’s black leather outfit from the film “Grease” sells for $405,700 at auction in Beverly Hills, California.

2022 – Oregon approves drug-policy reform ballot legalizing Psilocybin (magic) mushrooms for use in therapy, along with decriminalized possession of small amounts of drugs.
