1886 – First commercially alternating current (AC) electric power plant opens in Buffalo, New York.

1900 – German engineer Ferdinand Porsche patents front-wheel drive for automobiles.

1924 – First photo facsimile is transmitted across the Atlantic by radio from London to New York City.

1931 – His Master’s Voice and Columbia Records merge into EMI.

1933 – Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) camps are established in Cleveland Park District.

1937 – Third Heisman Trophy Award: Yale halfback Clint Frank.

1950 – President Harry Truman threatens China with atomic bomb.

1956 – At 21 years, 10 months, 3 weeks, 6 days Floyd Patterson becomes the youngest world heavyweight boxing champion as he knocks out Archie Moore in the 5th round in Chicago. Patterson is the first Olympic gold medalist to win a professional heavyweight title.

1958 – First United States guided missile destroyer launched, Dewey, at Bath Iron Works in Maine.

1961 – Billy Williams of the Chicago Cubs is voted National League Rookie of the Year.

1967 – Julie Nixon (daughter of former Vice President Richard Nixon) and David Eisenhower (grandson of former President Dwight D. Eisenhower) announce their engagement.

1969 – Singer-songwriter Neil Diamond makes his only appearance on “The Ed Sullivan Show,” singing “Sweet Caroline” and “Holy, Holy”

1976 – 42nd Heisman Trophy Award: Pittsburgh running back Tony Dorsett.

1982 – “Thriller,” the sixth studio album by Michael Jackson, is released. It wins Grammy Award Album of the Year for 1984, best-selling album of all time, and Billboard Album of the Year for 1983.

1983 – Radio Shack announces Tandy Model 2000 computer (80186 chip).

1991 – San Diego State’s Marshall Faulk is the first freshman to capture the national rushing and scoring title.

1998 – Deutsche Bank announces a $10 billion deal to buy Bankers Trust, thus creating the largest financial institution in the world.

2004 – Longtime “Jeopardy!” champion Ken Jennings of Salt Lake City, Utah, finally loses, leaving him with $2,520,700, television’s all-time biggest game show haul.

2015 – NBA star Kobe Bryant of the Los Angeles Lakers announces his intention to retire at the end of the season.

2021 – 15-year-old student Ethan Crumbley shoots four people dead and injures seven at Oxford High School in Oxford, Michigan.
