1895 – First automobile patent in the United States granted to George B. Selcen for a gasoline driven car.

1905 – Roald Amundsen reaches Eagle City, Alaska, to announce to the world by telegraph his is the first expedition, in 400 years of attempts, to complete the Northwest Passage.

1912 – Democratic candidate Woodrow Wilson is elected President of the United States, defeating Republican incumbent Howard Taft and Progressive candidate Theodore Roosevelt.

1917 – Supreme Court decision in Buchanan v Warley strikes down Louisville, Kentucky, ordinance requiring blacks and whites to live in separate areas.

1930 – 3rd Academy Awards: “All Quiet on the Western Front”, George Arliss (“Disraeli”) and Norma Shearer (“The Divorcee”) win.

1935 – Parker Brothers launches the board game Monopoly.

1940 – Franklin D. Roosevelt is re-elected President of the United States for an unprecedented third term, defeating Republican candidate Wendell Wilkie.

1953 – Film “How to Marry a Millionaire” directed by Jean Negulesco, starring Lauren Bacall, Betty Grable and Marilyn Monroe, is the first to be filmed in CinemaScope. It’s release is delayed to allow “The Robe” to debut in the format.

1956 – “The Nat King Cole Show” debuts on NBC, the first variety program to be hosted by an African-American.

1959 – American Football League is announced with eight teams – New York Titans, Boston Patriots, Buffalo Bills, Houston Oilers, Los Angeles Chargers, Denver Broncos, Oakland Raiders and Dallas Texans.

1967 – The expansion New Orleans Saints record their first National Football League victory, beating the Philadelphia Eagles 31-24.

1967 – United States troops conquer Loc Ninh, South Vietnam.

1978 – Oakland Raiders ‘John Madden becomes the 13th coach to win 100 National Football League games.

1987 – An iceberg twice the size of Rhode Island sighted in Antarctic.

1996 – Bill Clinton is re-elected President of the United States, defeating Republican candidate Bob Dole.

2017 – Gunman shoots 26 dead and injures 20 at a church in Sunderland Springs, Texas.

2017 – President Donald Trump begins a 12-day trip to Asia in Tokyo, Japan.

2018 – NASA’s Voyager 2 probe leaves the solar system, becoming the second human-made object to reach interstellar space.

2022 – 37th Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees: Pat Benatar and Neil Giraldo; Duran Duran; Eminem; Eurythmics; Dolly Parton; Lionel Ritchie, Carly Simon, Judas Priest, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis; Harry Belafonte; Elizabetht Cotten; Allen Grubman; Jimmy Lovine; and Sylvia Robinson.
