1902 – President Theodore Roosevelt threatens to start using army troops to work coal mines struck since May 12. It brings the owners to agree to abide by a Commission of Arbitration.

1914 – American inventor Garrett Morgan patents his safety hood device, which would later be refined into the gas mask.

1931 – Musical “Everybody’s Welcome” with Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey premieres in New York City.

1937 – A recorded trace of snow in Central Park, New York City.

1944 – US 1st Army begins Battle of Aachen, the first German city captured during World War II.

1947 – Children’s puppet TV program “Junior Jamboree,” later renamed “Kukla, Fran & Ollie,” premieres locally on WBKB in Chicago, Illinois.

1950 – “All About Eve” directed by Joseph I. Mankiewicz and starring Bette Davis and Anne Baxter premieres. It wins Academy Awards Best Picture in 1951.

1960 – Opponents of Fidel Castro executed in Cuba.

1962 – Edward Albee’s “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” opens on Broadway featuring actress Uta Hagen.

1964 – Australian swimmer Dawn Fraser wins her third consecutive Olympic 100-meter freestyle gold medal at the Tokyo Games in an Olympic record 59.05 seconds.

1966 – 173 United States aircraft bomb North Vietnam.

1968 – First American Basketball Association (ABA) game is played with the Oakland Oaks beating the Anaheim Amigos 132-129. The league featured a red, white and blue ball and 3-point field goal.

1978 – United States launches third generation weather satellite, the Tiros N.

1984 – John Henry becomes first thoroughbred to win $6 million.

1989 – Dow Jones down 190.58 points.

1999 – The United States Senate rejects ratification of the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty (CTBT)

2015 – First Democratic presidential candidates debate featuring Hillary Clinton, Bernie Sanders, Martin O’Malley, Jim Webb and Lincoln Chafee broadcast by CNN and held in Las Vegas, Nevada.

2018 – Kurdish forces make a deal with the Syrian army for them to patrol border areas in north east Syria to combat Turkish offensive after President Donald Trump pulls out United States forces.

2019 – Simone Biles becomes the most decorated gymnast in history when she wins a record 29th medal at the World Championships in Stuttgart, Germany.

2023 – Microsoft completes biggest buyout in gaming history, purchasing Call of Duty maker Activision Blizzard for $69 billion after approval by United Kingdom regulators.
