1746 – Princeton University in New Jersey received its charter.

1879 – Thomas Edison perfects carbonized cotton filament light bulb.

1907 – Ringling Brothers Greatest Show on Earth buys Barnum & Bailey circus.

1924 – Toastmasters International is founded.

1928 – Herbert Hoover speaks of “American system of rugged individualism.”

1934 – Notorious bank robber Charles “Pretty Boy” Floyd is shot and killed by FBI agents in East Liverpool, Ohio.

1939 – NBC becomes first network to televise a pro football game as the Brooklyn Dodgers beat Philadelphia Eagles 23-14 at Brooklyn’s Ebbets Field.

1951 – Earthquake hits Formosa, killing 100 people.

1962 – Cuban Missile Crisis: President John F. Kennedy addresses the nation in a televised address about Russian missile bases in Cuba and imposes a naval blockade on Cuba. It’s the beginning of the missile crisis.

1964 – United States performs underground nuclear test at Hattiesburg, Mississippi.

1968 – Apollo 7 returns to Earth.

1976 – Red Dye No. 4 is banned by the Food and Drug Administration after it is discovered that it causes tumors in the bladders of dogs. The dye is still used in Canada.

1979 – Walt Disney World’s 100-millionth guest enters the park in Orlando, Florida.

1988 – Elton John sells out Madison Square Garden in New York City for a record 26th time.

1991 – General Motors announces a nine-month loss of $2.2 billion.

1997 – Yahoo completes purchase of online communications and directory company Four11.

2005 – Tropical Storm Alpha forms in the Atlantic Basin, making the 2005 Atlantic Hurricane season the most active on record with 22 named storms.

2013 – “Lego Marvel Super Heroes” is first released in North America for some formats, including Xbox and Wii. It’s Lego’s best-selling video game.

2019 – Drug company Biogen claims to have created the first drug to slow the advance of Alzheimer’s disease called aducanumab. It was discontinued as a treatment in 2024.

2020 – Goldman Sachs agrees to pay record $3 billion to end probe into its role in 1MDB corruption scandal to regulators in the United States, United Kingdom, Hong Kong, Singapore and Malaysia.
