1911 – Future Baseball Hall of Fame pitcher’s dual for final time: Boston Rustlers’ Cy Young vs. Christy Mathewson of the New York Giants. Giants win 11-2.

1920 – VII Summer Olympic Games close at the Olympisch Stadion in Antwerp, Belgium.

1928 – Katherine Hepburn’s New York City stage debut in “Night Hostess.”

1935 – Millionaire Howard Hughes flies his own design H-1 racer plane at then-record 352.46 mph at Santa Ana, California.

1944 – US Army troops enter Germany for the first time during World War I.

1953 – Brooklyn Dodgers clinch National League pennant earlier than any other team, defeating the Milwaukee Braves 5-2. Brooklyn finishes with record of 105-49.

1958 – Jack Kirby demonstrates his first integrated circuit (IC) to his supervisor.

1960 – John F. Kennedy states he does not speak for the Roman Catholic Chruch and neither does the Church speak for him.

1964 – American long jumper Ralph Boston sets then world record of 27-feet, 4 1/4-inches at a meet in Los Angeles, California.

1970 – Timothy Leary, a proponent of LSD, escapes from a California jail while serving a sentence for possessing marijuana.

1973 – Two bettors win largest Daily Double, $19,909 in Detroit.

1979 – Hurricane Fredrick hits Mobile Alabama, results in five people killed and $23 million in damage.

1987 – Vince Coleman steals his 100th base for the third straight year.

1991 – Space shuttle STS 48 (Discovery 14) launched.

1999 – Farm Aid 12 held in Bristow, Virginia with performances by Willie Nelson, Neil Young, John Mellencamp, Dave Mathews Band, Susan Tedeschi, Keb’Mo’, Deana Carter, and Barenaked Ladies.

2003 – United Nations lifts sanctions against Libya after it agrees to accept responsibility and compensate the families of victims in the 1988 bombing of Pan Am Flight 103.

2017 – Apple unveils premium iPhone X costing $999, along with iPhone 8.

2023 – North Korea leader Kim Jong-un arrives in Russia on board his armored train to meet with President Vladimir Putin.

2023 – House Speaker Kevin McCarthy opens an impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden, without a formal House vote, amid some Republican calls to remove McCarthy from leadership.
