RALEIGH – The following are highlights from this week at the N.C. Department of Transportation. The stories below are also featured in NCDOT Now, the department’s weekly newscast.

Hurricane Ian

After hitting Florida and then South Carolina, Hurricane Ian moved north through North Carolina, downing trees, flooding roads and leaving many people without power.

Throughout the storm and in the days following, more than 2,000 department employees were out on the roads, erecting road closed and high-water signs, clearing downed trees and debris, directing traffic and working with state, local and private agencies to reopen roads as quickly and safely as possible.

In Ian’s aftermath, more than 100 North Carolina roads were closed due to downed trees and power lines or flooding.

Corridor K Groundbreaking

NCDOT, state and local officials gathered in Graham County earlier this week for the Corridor K groundbreaking.

This project aims to improve the mobility and safety in western North Carolina. It will feature a corridor with wider shoulders and climbing lanes, a new multiuse path and a land bridge constructed over a highway to provide safe passage in the area for wildlife and hikers. When it’s complete, the bridge will be one of the largest land bridges east of the Rocky Mountains.
