RALEIGH – The following are highlights from this week at the N.C. Department of Transportation. The stories below are also featured in NCDOT Now, the department’s weekly newscast.

Rodanthe Bridge Community Day

The Rodanthe Bridge spans 2.4-miles over Pamlico Sound and bypasses one of the most vulnerable sections of N.C. 12. Now that the project is nearing completion, April 9 was designated as Community Day, to give locals a feel for the new route.

The day began with 5-mile and 5K races benefiting the Rodanthe-Waves-Salvo Civic Association.

That afternoon, local officials made brief remarks, and the bridge opened to the public for pedestrians and bicycles until 5 p.m.

“This is something that will be a pathway to many things,” said Dare County Commissioner Bob Woodard. “A pathway to medical care for our residents and visitors, a pathway to education opportunities for young people, and a pathway for economic development.”

Spring Litter Sweep

Each April and September, NCDOT ramps up efforts to clean up NC’s roads and calls on volunteers for assistance. This year’s Spring Litter Sweep runs April 16-30.

Volunteers can request clean-up supplies such as trash bags, gloves and safety vests from local NCDOT county maintenance offices.

Last year, more than 13 and a half million pounds of litter were picked up.
