RALEIGH – The following are highlights from this week at the N.C. Department of Transportation. The stories below are also featured in NCDOT Now, the department’s weekly newscast.
Traffic Fatalities Increase
Last year, 1,755 people were killed in traffic crashes, the most traffic fatalities seen in North Carolina since the 1970’s.
While the state saw a decrease in pedestrian, cyclist and work-zone related crashes, deaths attributed to speeding, unbuckled seatbelts and distracted driving have increased. This overall increase mirrors nationwide trends.
Be part of the solution. To help keep you and your loved ones safe:
- Buckle your seatbelt;
- Don’t drive under the influence of drugs or alcohol; and
- Always pay attention on the road. Never drive distracted.
Journey of a Lost Wallet
Last spring, off Interstate 95, Scott Curri lost his wallet filled with a lifetime of personal treasures.
One day, while out in the field, NCDOT employee Bobby Liverman found the missing wallet.
What followed was a series of sleuthing that would have made Sherlock Holmes proud, as Liverman and fellow employee Sybil Stancil spent six weeks trying to match the wallet with its long-lost owner.
Their hard work paid off, and Scott received an extra special late Christmas present.
