Thoughts While Shaving

Thoughts While ShavingThe first full week in a new month is normally a busy time..expect nothing less this week….

Last weekend was busy, busy, BladenOnline part-timers and full-timers are very busy on weekends….We think you want to know…and normally, we are the only ones covering….

Have heard nothing new about the horse volunteers who were searching in the Tar Heel area…The horse was thought to have been mistreated…..Spoke early to one person listed in the original article…to confirm…Hopefully, all is well…

Assisted with the East Bladen Ducks Unlimited annual event held last Saturday evening…As plans were being made to begin to enjoy a delicious meal, organizers ask if I could do the prayer…..and I was prepared, when a young male (student) stepped up and agreed to pray…and he did a great job…We hear about many youngsters who tend to get in trouble…Failed to get his name…but reminded me that the majority of young folk are good, solid individuals who have moms, dads and teachers who care and set good examples…

Not sure why, but I enjoy reminiscing about individuals and businesses that were going strong for many years…many years ago…all over the county…In my early years, my knowledge was limited to the Bladenboro, Butters, and later, the E-town and Clarkton areas…and a little about NC 210….My maternal grand-mom grew up on the banks of South River…in Anders.

Coles Feed and Seed you need was a busy place this time of the year in E-town years ago….Hutchinson’s Drug store was next door….Also a Hutchinson’s Drug Store in Bladenboro, next door to Bullocks Department Store, across the street from the Cash Store, later Fishers and Red and White….and around the corner from Hinson’s Super Market…..In Butters, Fred Sessoms store was the place to shop, unless it was a BBQ sandwich you were looking for…M Nance’s Drive In (served the best sandwiches around)…Johnson’s Store in Abbottsburg, B&F Chevrolet in Clarkton as well as Prince Bros Furniture store, Johnson Cotton Co. and EJ Cox Co (one that continues to operate and thrive), Melvin Brothers in Dublin, Martin Wilson Store in Tar Heel…there were so many of these, many still in business…many closed and weeds growing up around them and some have been leveled over the years…

Google Bladen…so much history…The 24th Governor of North Carolina was John Owen from Bladen.  He served from 1828 to 1830. and James C. (Jimmy) Green, of Clarkton served as Lt. Governor from 1977 to 1985.

So much for my history lesson today….

“I am the wisest man alive, for I know one thing, and that is that I know nothing.” Plato, The Republic, 360 B.C.

“A long life may not be good enough, but a good life is long enough.” Benjamin Franklin, Poor Richard’s Almanack, 1733.

“Never impose on others what you would not choose for yourself.”  Confucius
