Thoughts While ShavingLabor Day weekend has arrived…It’s a public holiday celebrated on the first Monday in September and honors the labor movement. The holiday was established in 1887 by U.S. President Grover Cleveland. Canada also celebrates Labour Day at the same time, however over 80 other countries celebrate International Workers’ Day on May 1.

A reminder of the Annual Sidewalk Sale in Elizabethtown…

Friday night in September means high school football…West Bladen varsity entertains the Whiteville Wolfpack and East Bladen travels to St. Pauls…Both local teams are off to a 2-0 start…Games begin at 7:30 p.m. The Bladen Sports Network will be broadcasting the West Bladen game…Hope you can attend one of the games…If not, listen on or on WODR 105.3.

Tar Heels lose to Gamecocks, Blue Devils and Demon Deacons win. Carolina Panthers defeat the Steelers.

A couple of reminders… Jones Lake State Park is offering a viewing of an installment of “Planet Earth” Saturday at 8 p.m. Call Ranger John Privette if you have questions…910-588-4550 is the number.

The Bladen County Transfer Station will be closed Monday, in observance of Labor Day. All other collection sites will be open as usual.

Labor Day is normally the last “fling” of summer for many…doesn’t have to be…September and October are wonderful times of the year for outdoor activities in Bladen County.
