Thoughts While Shaving

Living in rural eastern North Carolina has many advantages.  When someone is in need, neighbors take care of neighbors and few do it better than the Bladenboro community.

In many areas of the county, Dixie Youth baseball is a huge deal.  Youngsters are provided a place to ‘use up’ some energy as they discover the game of baseball.  Adults give there time, some coaching, some raising money, some doing whatever it takes to make each spring and summer a fun time for the youngsters.

But funds are needed and last night, Elizabethtown supporters ‘turned-out’ for the annual fund-raiser.  A steak dinner for two, an opportunity to win the grand prize in a reverse-raffle and there were donations for an auction.  Some prepared the meal, some baked cakes.  They all came together, lead by many of those who will be coaching in a few weeks, and supporters who appreciate their efforts, opened their checkbook and provided the funds.

Over 200 purchased tickets, enjoyed a good meal and stayed around for all the events, then, cleaned up, and began to think about Dixie Youth baseball….It brought folks together to support the youth of the community.  A good event.

Other fund-raisers are planned for other communities and I hope they receive the same type support.

Visited my former walking ‘buddy’ yesterday.  Janice Johnson, critically injured in a two-vehicle accident September 11, 2014, is in the extended care unit at Pender hospital, in Burgaw.  Janice is coming home, well for one day, on February 28, if all goes as planned.  She and her family will attend Sunday morning services at Wesley’s Chapel United Methodist Church near Elizabethtown.  Everyone is invited.  A covered dish lunch will be open to all her friends.  Plan according.  She is making progress, great attitude and a strong desire to return home for good, sometime in the future.  Former pastor, Rev. David Wade has been invited to preach, if his health allows.
