Thoughts While ShavingHaving retired several years ago, I enjoy reflecting on my early days.  ‘Bout this time of year, before any of my 5 siblings left home, my dad was concerned that the 3 or 4 acres of tobacco we farmed was not completely out of the field and school would begin soon.  There was grading, and other preparation for market, to deal with.  Peanuts, cotton, corn, soybeans, all to be harvested and  his helpers preparing for back-to-school.  Needed to visit Rayless Department store in Lumberton to shop for pants, shirts, shoes and dresses for sisters.  Why Rayless?  Our aunt worked at the Lumberton store, and she could assist us.  And mom needed to complete a homemade shirt or dress made from a colorful ‘feed bag’ sack, while working in the field, the garden, preparing meals, cleaning our dirty clothes using a ‘scrub board’  and a tin tub, as well as the other jobs of being a mom.  Those were the days my friend, I thought they would never end….long, long ago.  Now in my file under ‘Good Old Days’.

A reminder of Summer Sounds of Sounds Concert series from 6 to 9 PM today at Cape Fear Farmers Market in Elizabethtown.  The Band of Oz will provide the music.  AND IT IS FREE.

Had a couple of calls related to the death of Robert C. Hester.  A good man who had a ‘soft spot’ in his heart for veterans and their families.  He will be missed.  Our sympathies to his family.  Check our Obit section for more info.  I am Robert G. Hester.  Robert Hester is a popular name in this area.

Powerball and Mega Million jackpot over $300 million each.  Can’t help but think of what it would be like to be the winner.  Oh well, may be more of a problem than being a non-winner.  But, I am willing to adjust if you want to share your winnings.  Remember a former winner, who, when questioned what he would do with his winning, indicated he would have the transmission in his old jalopy repaired.
