The recent shooting in Las Vegas is so difficult to understand. A 64 year-old millionaire, with nothing in his background that could explain his actions resulting in the death of 59 innocent country music fans and the injuring of another 500 plus. What happened? They walk among us!
Locally, farmers are harvesting, what appears to be, one of the best peanut crops ever. The gamble appears to have paid off this year. The corn crop was equally good. Blueberry farmers not so good, due to a late spring frost. Bladen County’s economy is determined, to a great degree, by the farming community.
When October arrives, I think of the Clarkton Tobacco Festival. It ended years ago. It was a time for residents countywide to say goodbye to summer and count their many blessing, or if a not-so-good crop, lick their wounds, by sharing the end-of-season event.
Guess it is good it ended, no shootings, no serious crimes committed. Just a good time.
Bladen County’s unemployment is in the 5% range, it topped out near 14% in 2010 and 2011. Now anyone looking for a job should be working, some may be hopeful of a better job. Usually a better job depends on a better qualified employee. There are jobs in the county, as well as others nearby. And for those who have no job and does not want a job, it’s time to go to work.
