Thoughts While Shaving

Another beautiful fall day is expected today.  High temp low to mid 80s with little or no wind.  Tonight, mostly clear with a low near 57 with a light east wind.  Perfect weather…..

October yesteryear hold so many memories….

When I see peanut fields with the nuts turned up to the sun, in preparation for final harvesting before they are delivered to local peanut companies, my mind flashes back to stacks of peanuts in much smaller fields,  no large equipment, all harvested by family members and friends.

Same for cotton, today its harvested by huge pieces of equipment, not so years ago.  Pickers (all ages) dragging a burlap bag, stuffing white cotton into the sack, and weighed in the field.  Many of us, who cared little for the opportunity, failed to pick enough to have a soft seat to take a break on.

We pulled the corn from the stalk, tossed it in a pile in the field, then loaded onto a wagon pulled by a mule or horse and delivered it to a nearby pack house.  Later shucked it, one ear at a time to be devoured by the animals.

Not sure I care to re-live those days, but the memories are etched forever in my mind.
