Remember years and years ago as the Thanksgiving season approached we drew fall pictures in school; quoted bible verses at the beginning of the school day; placed a chicken under a basket in preparation for the Thanksgiving feast, and visited the ‘smoke house’ to make sure ‘skippers’ had not contaminated the pork. Veggies, corn bread, home made biscuits, ice cold sweet tea and a home made cake, most likely a pound cake, as well as the meats, usually shared with both sets of grandparents, uncles, aunts & cousins, before nightfall and then, a ride home in a mule and wagon, later in a ’35 model Ford auto.
A church service, Wednesday evening or on Thanksgiving Day, was on the agenda and attendance for the Hester household was not an option, per mom’s rules.
