Spread the love

Thoughts While ShavingLate night NFL action – Miami Dolphins 27 – New England Patriots 20.

Newly elected and re-elected town officials across the county are being sworn-in.  Congratulations to all.

Congratulations to East Bladen football coach Robby Priest who was named Football Coach of the Year.  He shares the honor with two others, both with Bladen County ties.  Russell Dove of South Columbus (Bladenboro native – former West Bladen football coach) and Whiteville’s Luke Little, (parents are Clarkton area natives).  Pretty good company, all young, all smart and all very successful. John Clark covers it all in our Sports section….

Coach Ken Cross, former East and West Bladen basketball coach, retired, sort of and is working to build a basketball program at Paul R. Brown Leadership Academy.  He has much to overcome, facilities are not the best and many of his players have desire and some talent, but little experience, and scheduling is difficult.  It is a labor of love, but Cross, who coached a local team to a state championship several years ago, loves the game.

Bladen County Board of Education and county commissioners are strugglin’ to come up with a plan and the money to consolidate, including renovations and new construction.

President Trump’s administration has begun, again, to talk about infrastructure needs and how to fund a several billion dollar plan to upgrade public facilities.  Roads, airports, water needs and  broadband, have ranked high in previous administrations.  All have been structured differently.  Would be nice to see one that allows spending for local governmental needs.  Over the years, North Carolina has also approved a match for school facilities.  Either would be helpful.

The Bladen County Library building was constructed using such federal funds.  The county investment was the cost of the land.

In the current environment, tax overhaul, etc., funding may be more difficult.

Maybe Santa has some extra money!  Fat chance.
