Thoughts While Shaving
Spread the love

Thoughts While ShavingDon’t want to wish my life away, but looking forward to Monday, when an improvement in the weather is expected.  In our area of the world, temperatures in the single figures or close are few and far between.  Hopefully, we have just about reached our quota for a new year.

Average temps for January, for Bladen County, according to the National Weather Service:  High 54  Low 31.

Experiencing heating problems, equipment failure and replacement during this cold weather, I thought about years gone by, when three nearly grown brothers would back up to a small, trash heater, get red from the heat and race to the bedroom, position was important.  Regular size bed, with homemade quilts, first in had best position and in cold weather that was the middle, the two on the outside were more exposed to the elements.  And, the person in the middle may not keep that position if he was in bed early, and went to sleep.  Sometimes he was ushered to the side of the bed, ever so quietly as to make sure he was not awakened and attempt to defend his position.  Life is good and the memories are as well, but sometimes, as a youngster, not as much fun.

Lost a couple of classmates from Bladenboro High School, class of ’56.  Melba McKeithan and Billy Carroll passed away recently.  Billy lived in the Duplin County area, if my memory is correct, and Melba in or near Pembroke.  One by one the number is reduced.  Life is good and so much of it is shaped by time shared with family and classmates as youngsters.  Condolences to the families.

Drive with care, be aware of black ice, especially where tall trees keep sunshine from reaching the roadways.
